Artist-in-Residence Reception 2016

On Wednesday, August 24 the Fredericton Region Museum is hosting a celebration for its artists-in-residence for the 2016 season. The Artist-in-Residence program is run annually in the summertime to promote cooperation and collaboration between the history and art industries in Fredericton. Normally, 1-2 artists are hired and given a space in a central gallery in the museum to convert into their studio. The artists work there for four hours each day, five days per week, for either 3 or 6 weeks. Over the course of their time at FRM, they are required to complete a series of works inspired in some way by Fredericton’s history.

This summer, the FRM welcomed ceramics artist Jennifer McInnis-Wharton and multimedia artist Morgan Dugdale into the program. Jennifer was stationed at the museum from July 18 until August 6, and Morgan was stationed from August 8 until August 26.

Members of the public can join us at the museum (571 Queen St.) at 5:00pm (August 24) for short speeches, refreshments, and viewing of the works that both our artists have completed over the course of the summer. Guests will have the chance to talk to each of our artists about their experience at the museum. Members of the York Sunbury Historical Society are invited to pick up an application form for the Autumn Members Art Exhibition as well – an initiative that gives society members a space to sell and display their works.

The FRM would also like to thank the City of Fredericton for sponsoring this program and allowing it to thrive. Without their support artists would not have the opportunity to complete their residencies within the museum space.

New Donations from Afar

August 16, 2016 – The Fredericton Region Museum has been very fortunate to have received several new donations from individuals travelling to Fredericton from great distances. Videos detailing each donation can be found at the links following their brief descriptions.

Ms. Evajune White and her family travelled from Massachusetts to donate a collection of items belonging to her grandfather, Lt. Col. Percy. A. Guthrie. Ms. Barbara Moore and her husband travelled from Toronto, ON to donate a tool chest passed down through her family. It originates from the McFarlane family farm in Nashwaaksis, NB. https://youtu.be/qxl0N9M0bB0?list=PLkDCaTPdfQQlCssNQDAP61PzZXHaUIGoI

This Saturday (August 20), Mr. Robert Osgood and his family are travelling from New Glasgow, NS to donate his grandfather’s account book. The book dates back to the 1860s when Mr. Osgood’s grandfather was a solider in the 22nd regiment, serving in Fredericton. (Video will be filmed Saturday).

The museum wishes to thank the donators of these collections for travelling from so far. Donations such as these keep our collection alive and give us the opportunity to create new and impactful exhibits for the public.

Open House 2016

The Fredericton Region Museum is excited to announce the details of their annual Open House happening on the 14th of August. For one day each year, the museum opens their doors for free to everyone in the community. This event is not only an excellent opportunity for history lovers and frequent visitors, but also for visitors that cannot normally afford to visit museums. It also endeavours to spark an interest in those who are not normally inclined to visit museums.

As is done every year, museum employees will dress in historical costumes to make the museum experience seem a realistic and tangible as possible. Guided tours of our third floor space are available only on this day. The third floor is where our collections team works, and where all our artefacts that are not on display are stored. Third floor features two office spaces, a textile storage room, and three furniture storage rooms.

The theme of this year’s Open House is Arts & Crafts, in effort to unite the heritage and arts communities in Fredericton. In addition to the museum’s regular artist-in-residence program, several Fredericton-based artists will set up shop in various locations throughout the museum. Open House attendees will have the opportunity to watch artists work, try their hand at various art mediums, and ask the artists questions. A local musician will be on site to provide entertainment. There will also be a door prize competition.

For children, our summer camp staff will be running a craft station on the balcony. There will also be a face-painting station.

Artist-In-Residence Program 2016

For the fifth consecutive year, this July and August the Fredericton Region Museum is set to open one of its galleries as a studio for a local artist. The museum’s Artist-In-Residence program is run annually as a collaboration with artists to encourage a relationship between historical institutions and the art industry. This summer, the museum has secured two different artists, each joining the program for three weeks. Beginning her residency on the 18th of July is Jennifer McInnis-Wharton, and beginning on the 8th of August is Morgan Dugdale. During their respective residencies they will complete a series of works that is tied to and inspired by history.

 

Jennifer McInnis-Wharton is a sculpture artist hailing from the Northwest Territories. In 2013 she moved to Fredericton to attend the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. During her time at the Fredericton Region Museum she will be completing a series of clay pots inspired by the architecture of historical buildings in downtown fredericton. Visitors of the museum will have the opportunity to use different pottery tools, and even use McInnis-Wharton’s pottery wheel.

 

Morgan Dugdale is an upcoming artist who will be attending McKenzie College in Moncton this fall for the intensive visual art foundation program. She works with multiple mediums, including watercolour, acrylics, and digital painting. While at the Fredericton Region Museum, Dugdale will be completing a series of paintings of antique tea sets. Dugdale has always loved the collection of tea sets that are stored at the FRM, and will use them as her subjects. For her interactive element, visitors will be able to try out watercolour painting, sew their own tea bags (which they can take home with them), and smell different types of tea.

 

The Fredericton Region Museum was founded in 1934 by the York Sunbury Historical Society. In 1959, the Museum found permanent headquarters in the Officers’ Quarters (571 Queen Street) in the heart of downtown Fredericton. The Society and Museum remain a non-profit enterprise with a small paid staff and numerous volunteers who work tirelessly to create informative exhibits based on the history of Fredericton and surrounding areas, as well as publish a local history periodical, The Officers’ Quarters. Each year, the York-Sunbury Historical Society invites member artists and artisans to participate in our Annual Members Art Exhibition.  This unique art show allows member artists the opportunity to exhibit and sell their current work in the Fredericton Region Museum and to use the museum space to inspire new works.

Visual artists who are members of the York-Sunbury Historical Society exhibit and offer their work for sale on consignment in the museum’s seasonal flex gallery on the main floor during the month of September.

To Participate

Email the Executive Director with the following after June 1^st and before 5pm, on the third Friday in August:

• contact information
• a short bio (100-150 words),
• at least two (2) images of your work (300DPI in jpeg format),
• dimensions of work (so that we can plan the space)
• artist photo (300DPI in jpeg format), and
• a short description of your work

If Selected You

• give permission to the Fredericton Region Museum to use your biography, name, likeness and artwork for media information and publicity purposes
• certify that the artwork submitted is original artwork created by you
• agree to abide by the rules and guidelines laid out
• recognize that any insurance coverage of the artwork is your full responsibility

 

Conditions

• The artist must be a member in good standing of the York-Sunbury Historical Society
• All works must be original to the participating artist and not assisted, imported or manufactured by others.
• It is up to the artist to price the submitted work.
• The artwork being shown will be limited to two to four (2 to 4) pieces per artist depending on size and space.
• Artwork must be able to attach to the Centre’s installed hanging system.
• Participants will not hold the YSHS responsible for breakage or damage of work.
• The YSHS earns a 20% consignment rate on all works sold while on display at the museum.

Artists will be contacted about any sales enquiries during the exhibition.
